    Responsibilities
    The Plastic Component Design Engineer is ultimately responsible for all design work effort of all plastic injected components and the necessary tool design effort, used in the manufacture of the Company's products. The Plastic Component Design Engineer will work with other engineers and internal company personnel to define product specifications, develop conceptual and final design solutions, manage and coordinate project activities, support existing product offerings, and perform testing/analysis of new and existing products. The Plastic Component Design Engineer will have direct interface with field-support, purchasing, engineering, and manufacturing operations as well as management in the performance of their duty. The Plastic Component Design Engineer is responsible to the Engineering Manager for the performance of all plastic components used in the product line, as well as required to investigate, develop, test and commission design improvements.
     
    Key Responsibilities
    • Have full 'cradle to grave' responsibility on design projects
    • Work with design engineers and plastic industry suppliers (both processors and resin) to identify cost reduction opportunities in plastic components
    • Develop molding strategies and approaches
    • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and developing new mold and molding suppliers where needed for specific capability or for commercial reasons
    • New / Modified component designs to be engineered with a focus on all cost implications
    • Create all supporting documentation and calculations for projects and tests
    • Create solutions against agreed technical specifications for all projects
    • Creation of mechanical design output documentation including BoMs, material specifications, 3D-CAD models, and part and assembly drawings
    • Creation of design documentation such as engineering change orders, design specifications, verification plans and risk analysis for documentation control
    • Control and plan all aspects of design tasks for each process stage to meet budget, timescales and review dates in conjunction with the project team
    • Coordinate with Customers and Sales staff to ensure customer requirements are correctly understood, interpreted and driven throughout the business
    • Liaison with internal/external suppliers for parts and fabrications on the development of new plastic injection molded components
    • Support and continuously improve Engineering processes within the team using quality controlling techniques
     
    Minimum Requirements
    • Minimum education is a B.S. in mechanical engineering or design
    • 5+ years experience in the plastics molding industry as a tooling, process, or manufacturing engineering, preferably in a proprietary or custom molding organization
    • Have extensive knowledge of plastic manufacturing processes, including: injection molding, basic and complex mold design, mold build fabrication, mold operation automation, post-mold automation, and molded part quality inspection
    • Possess extensive knowledge of plastic molded component qualification plans including practical part inspection methods and basic quality engineering skills
    • Sound understanding of stress analysis, plastic injection molding and flow analysis
    • Develop detail and assembly drawings
    • Expert proficiency in a 3-D CAD design software package is required. Must be fully CAD literate (Pro-E), experience in drawing control, ECR and ECO along with experience in PDM program (Windchill)
    • Direct experience in advanced mechanical design and engineering
    • Strong communications skills are essential, both written and oral
    • Able to demonstrate application of parametric and configuration design
    • Must possess the ability to work across functional boundaries and organizational levels inside the company in a start up environment
    • Must be self motivated and a good, clear, concise communicator - internally and externally
    • Must live in Irvine, CA or surrounding area
    • Valid driving license and an acceptable driving record
    • The legal right to work in the United States
